Murska Sobota / Slovenia

  • Museum

Today, the Renaissance mansion with baroque elements on the façade is the seat of the Pomurje Museum Mursk Sobota and with its permanent exhibition it describes the life of inhabitants along the Mura River from prehistoric times until today.

The castle of Mura Zombotha is first mentioned in 1398. Until 1687 the Széchy family were the owners of the castle, and the Szapáry family after them, possessing it until 1934. The Renaissance mansion, whose front has elements of Baroque decoration, is now the headquarters of the Pomurje Museum Murska Sobota, which is also the central regional institution for the protection of movable cultural heritage in the region of Pomurje. Its permanent exhibit presents a story of the inhabitants along the river Mura through various historical periods from prehistory until today. A tombstone replica of Karl von Herberstorff, a citizen of Radgona from Tišina, depicts in a most picturesque way the era of the 16th and the 17th centuries.
