Slovenia

Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia, is a country located in southern Central Europe where the Alps and the Mediterranean meet the Pannonian plains and the mysterious Karst. It is bordered by Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the northeast, Croatia to the southeast, and the Adriatic Sea to the southwest. It covers 20,273 square kilometers and has a population of 2.07 million. The official language is Slovene. The capital and largest city is Ljubljana. The highest mountain is called Triglav (2864m high). The mountain is a true national symbol, featured on the national coat of arms and the flag.

Reformation In Slovenia

Reformation and Counter-Reformation movements – that shook Slovene countries in the restless 16th Century – brought a lot to Slovenes, and at the same time, it took a lot, too. Slovenes got the first book and the unified language with Primož Trubar, but this giant of Slovene nation, died in a foreign country because he was exiled. Dalmatin and Bohorič, who gave to Slovenes the first translation of the Bible and the first Slovenian Grammar, had to hide themselves before authorities of the law. The same happened to everyone that spread the new confession.

Books and churches were burned; people were chased from their homes, if they did not obey and rejected the establishment. Everything that was revolutionary, that required changes, was repressed. Despite all tendencies to return to the old paths, the changes started to happen in Slovenia because of the Reformation movement. Protestantism continued only in the Northeast of Slovenia, in Prekmurje, where most of the Slovene Evangelicals live today.
