Cranach Courtyards
Lutherstadt Wittenberg / Germany
- Martin Luther (1483–1546)
- Building
The famous artist Lucas Cranach maintained the most important art workshop of his time and portrayed his friend, the reformer Martin Luther, among others. He also owned a printing company, that published Martin Luther's translation of the Bible.
The famous painter Lucas Cranach (the Elder) lived for almost half a century at the Saxon court in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, where he created the paintings that are now in the world's major museums. In the today´s Cranach Courtyards, he ran a successful painting workshop and a printing company. Martin Luther's translation of the Bible appeared here. Cranach also took over the only pharmacy in Wittenberg and acquired privileges for serving wine and beer. Today both farms are cultural monuments of national importance. In the historic Cranach House on the market, you can see the exhibition "Lucas Cranach and his time", but also look over the shoulder of artists at work. In "Café 3" or in the "Hofwirtschaft" - located in Schlossstrasse 1 - you can enjoy the historical ambience with a cup of coffee and a piece of cake.
