Around 1250 the nunnery for Cistercian woman was founded as donation from royal families in the region.

The convent in Donndorf was attacked during the Peasants' War in 1525. Farmers and rebels were on their way to Bad Frankenhausen to became part of the movement around Thomas Müntzer. Shortly before they reached their destination, they came across the monastery in Donndorf. Everything besides the buildings was destroyed or taken by them. After the end of the Peasants' War the convent was resolved.

Later the buildings were used as a free grammar schoold for local and talented boys. They could get to the school without a special social status. The boys had to show their qualification by an exam. Thus, it considerably supported the spreading of Reformation ideas and values after the local administration decided to follow the Reformation's path. Since 1995 the place is used as an educational institute for all kind of people - it's called "Ländliche Heimvolkshochschule Thüringen e.V." - and has a wide range.
