All Saints’ Church
Wittenberg / Germany
- Martin Luther (1483–1546)
- Church
"When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand," he wanted the whole life of believers to be repentance. " This is the first of 95 theses against church disgraces that, according to legend, Martin Luther installed on the door of the All Saints´ Church on October 31, 1517.
The All Saints´ Church was built in 1506 on the foundations of the original castle of the Elector of Anhalt. The 88 meters high church tower is visible from distance. The line of text from the famous psalm and hymn of Martin Luther “A strong castle is our God” is written in large letters on the church tower. The portal of the church is still inseparable linked with the dramatic events of the Reformation. Until today, visitors can read the 95 theses in their original language - Latin - on the door of the All Saints´ Church. Inside the church, the grave of Martin Luther and the final resting place of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon can be visited. The church has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lutherstadt Wittenberg since 1997.
